Aging is for the Birds

If you’ve ever watched the 1986 cult classic The Highlander and heard the Queen song with the famous lyrics “Who wants to live forever?” then you might know where I’m going with this.  That being said, I’m afraid there will not be any epic sword-fights here (sorry).

You might be wondering, how does Aging relate to the theme of this site?  Medical technology can be a very interesting subject, even for those who aren’t studying to earn spiffy initials after their names.  It may be surprising, but the medical science to end aging (or at least make it less painful) is actually being explored on mice in labs all over the world right now.  Human trials will begin soon (who’s in?)

I won’t get into the philosophical discussion around the topic (that deserves much more attention than I can give it!) but the idea that I might live long enough to hang out with my great grandchildren sounds pretty enticing to me.  Being able to actually enjoy life while I age sounds even better.  Growing some new hair on my balding head would be a nice bonus, too.

If you’re curious about the topic, start with a straightforward and engaging video from Kurzgesagt that tackles the issue and then follow up with their related video that talks about some of the current techniques actively being researched.

As noted in the second video, you can check out and even contribute on Lifespan.io, a project of the Life Extension Advocacy Foundation (LEAF), to get more information on the subject.

To really dig in and get some nitty gritty details, see their blog on LeafScience.org.
